Perspective

Since I read blogs from all over, in and outside of the US, I was reflecting on my realm called "home" a great deal this weekend.  I will be honest, sometimes I feel jealous when I read others' blogs, written from such different and unique locations.  I turn to look out my window and think, "My! how plain and boring."  The hills only roll, and never form mountains.  The trees are maples, oaks, evergreen, and the lucky birch, and all host very plain squirrels and birds.  The cities are old, the suburbs are obnoxious, and there never seems to be enough land for developers.

Yet perspective is the key behind beauty, isn't it?  Remember that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

And I was able to gain more perspective this weekend, as I was reflecting on my little world.  Once you are able to break away from the suburbs, travel far north or meander south, sights begin to remind you of the beauty that "home" can give.

There were the interesting, not-quite-so-every-day sights....

....the Niagara River (yes, it is near the Falls).

And also a world far from fascinating, associated with simplicity.  But when you look close....

....you begin to see the beauty of Western New York.

Perspective is a good word, don't you think?

Do you have any nice reflections on the weekend, or how your world is turning beautiful this spring?  I'd like to know your perspective as well!

P.S.  Yes, the shawl has appeared again.  My shawl pattern is in full swing!  I hope to get it all together soon.  Saturday morning was spend pretending to be a part of the "Sound of Music", as I was getting pictures for its publication.  I sneaked in my sweater since I was unable to get nice pictures of it before, so more of those pictures might be showing up in the near future as well.

    1. How true! It is incredibly humbling to remember how lucky we really are. What a good (and necessary) reminder! Have a lovely week :)

  3. I think that's the danger of the blog world, as it's all perspective - always something to compare our worlds too. For us, to the right is a view of the water and mountains, and to the left is the ugliest apartment building I've ever seen. :) Sometimes I think the smaller the world, the more soothing. That being said, it's nice to have the ability to travel far online too. (oh, and in our parts maple and oak trees are treasured- as we are swimming in pines!) I love your pictures of the water, it is such a beautiful color. Have a great week.

    1. I love your comment :) I have to agree, whenever I focus on a smaller world and stop lamenting at what I want to see, I am grateful and content. "Soothing" is a good word for it! Our imaginations are powerful, though, so it is REALLY kind of nice to pretend to have visited each place in person. Hope your week has gone well!

    1. Yes, I have finally seen the falls frozen this winter (well...it was March)!! I never went before. That was a gorgeous display. Still, I'm glad it's melted! Things are looking very green, and I'm very happy! Have a good rest of your week :)

  5. I think we all tend to do this. I know when I see blog posts from Scotland, Shetland or the English coast I am filled with envy. But those bloggers probably feel the same when they see our posts from Canada and the US. I was thinking of your post this morning when I wrote my latest. http://journeynorthof49.blogspot.ca/2015/05/reality-check.html

    1. Maybe it's because we think that if we lived somewhere else, we would also be different, or lead a different life? I really enjoyed your post! Have a wonderful rest of your weekend!

  6. As the others have said I agree with you that it's all about perspective. When I look at where you are, I see lots of green spaces, rushing rivers, and quiet. My area of NY is urban and loud but even that has it's charm. I don't have pictures but when the vibrancy overwhelms me I head to the park -- that definitely soothes me. I do agree that we each need to find the beauty in the areas we live in.

    Lovely shawl!

    1. Thank you so much! I hope I didn't give the wrong impression by these pictures, because then I have done exactly what I had been writing about!! I carved out the memories and hid the rest: the trailer park next to my grandparents' land and the crowds of people sitting on both sides of the river. Charm is hidden, and we have to pluck it out from no matter where we are! I live in a more urban area, too, so these were my excursions out to a greater peace and beauty. Beauty exists, but only seen when sought :) Thanks again for your compliment on the shawl, Nicky!
